ACT English Ambiguous Pronouns
Well, Magooshers, itââ¬â¢s time for another installment of my (non) patented ACT English advice. Todayââ¬â¢s topic is ambiguous pronouns. To get us started, hereââ¬â¢s an example, something one of my students in sophomore English may have written years ago: Mark decided to go out for coffee. At the coffee shop he ran into his old friend, Steve. Heââ¬â¢s such a great guy. The twoâ⬠¦. And thatââ¬â¢s where I stopped reading, at least for a moment or two as I got out my red pen and circled ââ¬ËHeââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢. You see, even though the student probably thought Steve was a great guy, the student had fallen into the ambiguous pronoun trap and didnââ¬â¢t know it. In this article I want to go over ambiguous pronouns, and how to avoid them on the ACT English Test. So if you can stick with me over the next few paragraphs, Iââ¬â¢ll help you ensure that no pronoun, ambiguous or otherwise, ever tricks you up again. A Short Pronoun Primer Before going further, refresh your knowledge of pronouns by reading SAT Writing: Everything You Need to Know About Pronouns. In this article is a lot of good information you cant afford to miss. Below Ive summarized some key information relevant to our ambiguous pronoun journey. As you (hopefully) already know, pronouns are nouns that refer to people, places, things, or ideas that have already been mentioned by their proper names. Pronouns fall into two groups: singular and plural. As the names suggests, singular pronouns (ex: he, she, I, yourself) refer to one person or thing. Plural pronouns (ex: they, them, those, theirs) refer to two or more people or things. Most Importantly: A pronoun must always match its antecedent. An antecedent is the thing or things which the pronoun replaces in the sentence/paragraph. What Makes an Ambiguous Pronoun? First of all, no pronoun is ambiguous on its own. Only when a writer (usually a young writer, but it happens even to the best of us) doesnt make the pronoun/antecedent relationship clear. To get us started, letââ¬â¢s review the example at the beginning of this article. The passage starts off talking about Mark, which means that Mark is the subject of the paragraph. The standard rules of English dictate that any ââ¬Ëheââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëhisââ¬â¢ in the paragraph refer to Mark. Yet Steve appears in the second sentence. Suddenly, the paragraph is about the actions of both men. A writer can no longer use ââ¬Ëheââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëhis,ââ¬â¢ but must use ââ¬ËMarkââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ or ââ¬ËSteveââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ to refer to either man. You donââ¬â¢t have to write an entire paragraph to make an ambiguous pronoun mistake. Here is an example of a single sentence with an ambiguous pronoun: Mark met Steve after he had dinner. Though the writer might know that Mark was the person who had dinner, the presence of two names in the sentence makes it impossible to use ââ¬Ëheââ¬â¢ as a pronoun. Heres the correct way to write the sentence: Mark met Steve after Mark had dinner. A Quick Aside: Though the sentence above is technically correct, and would be a correct answer on the ACT English Test, is isnââ¬â¢t the best way convey information. If youââ¬â¢re focused on improving the flow of your writing, take note of the better version below: After Mark had dinner, he met Steve. Now, doesnââ¬â¢t that sentence just sound nicer? ðŸâ¢â Catching Ambiguous Pronouns on the ACT Below are the steps you should follow when answering ACT English Test questions regarding pronouns. Step 1: Match the pronoun to its antecedent. Even if you immediately catch a mistake, donââ¬â¢t skip any steps. There may be more going on than meets the eye. Step 2: Determine if the antecedent and pronoun are both singular or plural. If one is singular, and the other plural, youââ¬â¢ve caught the mistake. Step 3: If there is a singular/plural mismatch, there is one final thing to keep in mind. There is such a thing as ââ¬Ënon-gendered singular pronouns.ââ¬â¢ Below is an example that includes a common mistake. Dear parents, I am so happy to have your child in my class this year. I am sure they will have a wonderful time as we learn about all sorts of fun things.à Now, since this letter is going out to parents of boys and girls, the writer canââ¬â¢t specifically say ââ¬Ëheââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ësheââ¬â¢. Also, the antecedent (your child) is singular, making the pronoun ââ¬Ëtheyââ¬â¢ automatically incorrect. Thatââ¬â¢s why when correcting this sentence, ââ¬Ëhe or sheââ¬â¢ is the correct answer. Final Thoughts on Ambiguous Pronouns Instead of just wishing you luck on the ACT English Test, I want to leave you with a few more solid pieces of advice that will help you out on ACT Test day. Enjoy! Use ââ¬Ëheââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ësheââ¬â¢ only when referring to people. I know some people call their cars/boats/whatever ââ¬Ëshe,ââ¬â¢ but the correct pronoun is ââ¬Ëit.ââ¬â¢ It is perfectly fine to use ââ¬Ëoneââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëyouââ¬â¢ when writing about someone else. Yet once you choose which word to use in your writing, you canââ¬â¢t switch back and forth. If the underlined pronoun has no antecedent in the sentence, the correct answer is just about always the proper noun. When the underlined pronoun is unclear, the correct answer is usually the one that provides a proper noun as part of the phrase. Last, but certainly not least, the best way to develop your pronoun savvy is to READ! Find some time to get your head out of a study book and put it into a good novel or short story. As pronouns appear, take note of the pronoun/antecedent agreement. Besides studying and take practice tests, this trick is one of the best ways to improve your ACT English Test score. Till next time, Magooshers.

But now Im in this position. Krogstad: (Notices open letter on table) Torvald, listen. I did that for my family, my children, Torvald. What you would have done, if you were desperate? I am sorry, and I apologise to Nora as well, but I did send you the contract.à Torvald: Yes you did send me the contract, but also the letters, I think you forget.à Krogstad: I have children. They are my life. My life, Torvald, cant you see that? You spend your life shaping your image, I spend mine trying to feed mine. But now, at least I have a chance Im willing to take, for my kids, god knows as long as theres meat on my bones I would do anything for themà Torvald: Krogstad.Krogstad, Krogstad, Krogstad.(Looks at picture of family on the wall). You do have children, dont you, as do I Krogstad: Yes, thank you for understanding-à Torvald: Please leave.à Krogstad: What?à Torvald: Leave. Dont ever come back. If you do, Ill notify the police of what you did. You and Ms Linde and your starving children. Go.Krogstad: (Walks toward the door and opens it.) You know, Nora did what she did because she loved you, Torvald. Nora-à Torvald: Nora is gone! Nora left me Krogstad! Because of you and your lovely bloody letter! Racially Biased Pretextual Traffic Stops Essays - Law Enforcement
Racially Biased Pretextual Traffic Stops The interviews excerpted here show that racially biased pretextual traffic stops have a strong and immediate impact on the individual African-American drivers involved. These stops are not the minor inconveniences they might seem to those who are not subjected to them. Rather, they are experiences that can wound the soul and cause psychological scar tissue to form. And the statistics show that these experiences are not simply disconnected anecdotes or exaggerated versions of personal experiences, but rather established and persistent patterns of law enforcement conduct. It may be that these stops do not spring from racism on the part of individual officers, or even from the official policies of the police departments for which they work. Nevertheless, the statistics leave little doubt that, whatever the source of this conduct by police, it has a disparate and degrading impact on blacks. But racial profiling is important not only because of the damage it does, but also because of the connections between stops of minority drivers and other, larger issues of criminal justice and race. Put another way, driving while black reflects, illustrates, and aggravates some of the most important problems we face today when we debate issues involving race, the police, the courts, punishment, crime control, criminal justice, and constitutional law. A. The Impact on the Innocent The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures, and specifies some of the requirements to be met in order to procure a warrant for a search. Since 1961--and earlier in the federal court system--the Supreme Court has required the exclusion of any evidence obtained through an unconstitutional search or seizure. From its inception, the exclusionary rule has inspired spirited criticism. Cardozo himself said that the criminal is to go free because the constable has blundered, capturing the idea that the bad guy, caught red handed, gets a tremendous windfall when he escapes punishment because of a mistake in the police officer's behavior. We need not even go all the way back to Cardozo to hear the argument that the exclusion of evidence protects--and rewards--only the guilty. The justification advanced for the exclusionary rule is that while the guilty may receive the most direct benefit when a court suppresses evidence because of a constitutional violation, the innocent--all the rest of us--are also better off. The right to be free from illegal searches and seizures belongs not just to the guilty, but to everyone. The guilty parties who bring motions to suppress are simply the most convenient vehicles for vindicating these rights, because they will have the incentive--escaping conviction--to litigate the issues. In so doing, the argument goes, the rights of all are vindicated, and police are deterred from violating constitutional rules on pain of failing to convict the guilty. One problem with this argument is that it takes imagination: the beneficiaries of suppressed evidence other than the guilty who escape punishment are ephemeral and amorphous. They are everybody--all of us. And if they are everybody, they quickly become nobody, because law-abiding, taxpaying citizens are unlikely to view ourselves as needing these constitutional protections. After all, we obey the law; we do not commit crimes. We can do without these protections--or so we think. It is not my intention here to recapitulate every argument for and against the exclusionary rule. Rather, I wish to point out a major difference between the usual Fourth Amendment cases and the most common driving while black cases. While police catch some criminals through the use of pretext stops, far more innocent people are likely to be affected by these practices than criminals. Indeed, the black community as a whole undoubtedly needs the protection of the police more than other segments of society because African- Americans are more likely than others to be victims of crime. Ironically, it is members of that same community who are likely to feel the consequences of pretextual stops and be treated like criminals. It is the reverse of the usual Fourth Amendment case, in that there is nothing ghostlike or indefinite about those whose rights would be vindicated by addressing these police practices. On the contrary, the victims are easy to identify because they are the great majority of black people who are subjected to these humiliating and difficult experiences but who have done absolutely nothing to deserve this treatment--except to resemble, in a literally skin-deep way, a small group of criminals. While whites who have done nothing wrong generally have little need to fear constitutional violations by the police, this is decidedly

Acute Problems in Regard to Modern Society and Religion
Acute Problems in Regard to Modern Society and Religion Young Pope - Young Religion The religion question is always under active discussion. People argued from the ancient times about different religious trends and beliefs. Our history faced even long and bloody wars, which were started, basing on the religious background. So if you are not from a religious family and came across a course of religion at university, it can become a complicated affair to sort all those things out. As in any matter of such serious kind it is discussed from different points of view and with the providing all kind of various factors. To write an appropriate essay or to prepare an informative report, one should sweat over a large scope of informational resources. Religion as a strong manipulative mechanism Unfortunately, most of the historical events, which humanity have faced and which have more or less relation to religion, were often a speculation of the people being in the pursuit of power and authority. It can be easily understood, if you read original religious literature. Thus, the statements written, for example, in the Bible encourage us not to do murder, not to steal, etc. So, the religion by itself has the peaceable and kind thoughts and beliefs, which are aimed to make a person better and harmonious. But at the same time it can be an effective tool for the manipulation of the hundreds or even thousands of righteous minds. Thus, the modern cinematographic embodiment of the intrigues in the higher religious circles is displayed in the English-language Italian television drama series, called ââ¬Å"Young Popeâ⬠. This story can be to some extend disappointing, since if the serving in the church people can undertake such affairs, what we can wait from the ordinary people, who have so many temptations. Nevertheless, the strong and independent pope appears to become a real leader and nipped the desired manipulations in the bud. So if you want to start exploring religious questions, you can begin with the films like ââ¬Å"Young Popeâ⬠. Of course, you cannot be able to study this theme in such a way, but through it you can prepare yourself for serious and often contradictory resources and books in religion. Developing brands and branches With every year such religions as Christianity, Islam and Buddhism give a lot of branches and newly created religious groups. People interpret beliefs in some other manner, create their own churches and gather the followers. We should admit that there is nothing bad in this fellowships and groups, if people have peaceful and positive goals, though the main churches often do not confess these branches. Along with the numerous religious filiations, there are a lot of groups and pseudoreligions, arranged by swindlers. They use the religious background and psychological methods for personal profit, most often the financial one. While surfing with an objective to learn about religion more or just receiving invitations to join some religious group, be sure to find out everything at first. Nowadays, there are a lot of examples, when people, who wanted to lead a righteous being, were coaxed out of their money or were trapped into the physical or moral slavery. New age ââ¬ânew problems The life of the society and moral principles differ with each decade. It is hard to imagine our grandmother to talk about the official recognition of homosexual marriage. But for our time such things become more and more common. There is the democracy in the social life of the people, so very often we hear the same question towards religious institutions and representatives. Besides, such questions are also raised in the ââ¬Å"Young Popeâ⬠and a lot of other films. Perhaps, it is the question, which disturbs a lot of people and democracy fighters in our society, so that is why it is so relevant. Besides, young pope can better realize all similar problems, since he is a representative of the modern generation and understands the opinions, which are generated by the youth. Thus, you can see that the questions and issues concerning religion are very difficult and ambiguous. Anyway, respect all religions and people, since no matter what religion they adhere, the thing, which really matters, is our human qualities and open-heartedness.

Looking for logical fallacies by both genders Essay
Looking for logical fallacies by both genders - Essay Example onââ¬â¢s wife plots to murder him on the fallacy of equivocation because she believes it will enable their adulterous affair with Aesgisthus to succeed and also own the family wealth. The decision to capture Cassandra, the daughter of the defeated Trojan king by Agamemnon is another manifestation of the appeal to tradition when family members suffered because of their parentââ¬â¢s evil during war. The above fallacies, therefore, have deeper meanings in critically examining the play. Clytemnestra murderous plot, for instance, demonstrates the wickedness that women commit when restrain lacks in society because of flimsy reasons such as the sacrifice of oneââ¬â¢s daughter. Contrastingly, the logical fallacy in Agamemnonââ¬â¢s capture of Cassandra reveals the theme of womenââ¬â¢s subjugation during conflicts such as wars and tragedies (Aeschylus 14). These scenarios make them vulnerable to the whims of evil men such as Agamemnon who faces revenge from his own household. It equally exposes the breakdown of families when resolving conflicts especially where differences range from jealousy to
